Author of Color Your Cloth!

Award-winning artist Malka Dubrawksy presents a bold, modern take on dyeing, geared especially to quilters and fiber artists in Color Your Cloth. She’s whipped up a variety of easy patterning techniques—including resist, discharge, and overdyeing—for creating one-of-a-kind fabrics, as well as more than a dozen simple projects that use the vibrant cloth. We chatted with Malka for a sneak peek into her passions and what she absolutely can’t live without!

Hometown: Austin, Texas

In The Beginning: I’ve always worked as an artist, but a first I primarily made prints.

Inspiration: Color definitely inspires me, especially certain color pairings like orange and chartreuse and yellow and gray.

Known For: Intense colors and pretty fearless approach to mixing colors

Eureka Moment: My eureka moment definitely came when I realized patterning fabric reminded me of making prints but it was so much more direct. The image happened on the fabric unlike prints where the image happened on a printing plate and had to be transferred to the paper.

Pet Peeve: Tangled fabric in the sewing machine.

Words of Advice: Trust your color intuition. Everyone has an innate palette. Don’t second guess yours.
