Susan Tierney Cockburn

LARK TITLE: Paper Bouquet

HOMETOWN: I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but my parents built a home in Brandywine, Maryland, when my father retired from the U.S. Navy. I graduated from high school, college, and met my husband in Maryland.

IN THE BEGINNING: I loved to draw and paint, so my parents enrolled me in The Famous Artist School founded by Norman Rockwell. Along with my love of gardening, it was a natural progression to use artistic mediums and paper to replicate flowers.

INSPIRATION: My mother, Helen, and Grandma Gladys, who let me follow them into the garden and be amazed by its beauty.

KNOWN FOR: I designed a line of stamps called Punch Blossoms® where the leaves are drawn, but the flower area needs to be filled in with three-dimensional punched paper pieces. Also, I self-published a book called The Paper Garden-Summer Blooms in 2006.

CURRENT OBSESSION: I would like to go to South Africa and teach my paper flowers at The Oprah Winfrey School for Girls.

DAY JOB: Paper art teacher

I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT MY: Interchangeable ball stylus.

CRITICS ARE LIKE: Teachers. Listen and learn a new perspective.

NEXT PROJECT: I love to quilt and would like to one day translate my punch blossom designs into fabric. However, there are still a ton of flowers waiting to be created in paper!

PERSONAL MOTTO: Be delighted in the simple things.

PET PEEVE: People who are afraid to fail—some of my biggest achievements have come from failing the first time.

WHAT I’D BE IF I WEREN’T AN AUTHOR/DESIGNER: I would have gone on to law school and lobbied for affordable health care for everyone in the United States.
