Name: Steve Meltzer.
Hometown: Gig Harbor, WA.
In the beginning…: At 10 years old I took a neat multi-angled photo of the UN building through a bus window and I was hooked.
Inspiration: Henri Cartier-Bresson & Cornell Capa.
Eureka Moment: Got paid $1200 for an overexposed cloud picture I almost threw away.
Current obsession: Shooting great pictures with the worst cameras I can find.
Favorite camera/equipment: Leicas of any sort except for their lousy SLRs.
I can’t live without my…: $100 macro lens.
Critics are like…: Jewish mothers on steroids, far from perfect but on your case all the time.
Studio soundtrack/theme song: Radio Tarifa.
Next project: Searching For Flaubert’s Normandy.
Pet peeve: Small people who think small thoughts.
Proudest moment: Photo show “Too Many Flags,” a show about the daily desecration of the American flag by folks who used it as bras, shorts, swimsuits, t-shirts, caps, car decor and home decoration, while other Americans were dying for that same fabric. Shown at PhotoVisa/Festival Off (Perpignan, France 2003).
What I’d be if I weren’t an author/photographer: Out cold.
Words of advice: Remember that women are the only proof that there is a God.
Lark titles: Photographing Arts, Crafts & Collectibles, and Capture the Light.
